Theos (Θεός) is the Greek word for "God" used in the New Testament. Prior to Christianity, the term was used to speak of the various Greek gods. Numerous philosophers such as Heraclitus used the term in the more vague sense of the "divine" and "theoi" (the plural) to talk about the gods of whom the common people believe.
