The Spiritual Side of Those Pesky Little Numbers
Albert Einstein said that the most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. He called it the source of all true art and science.
Numerology, for many has been identified as a science. By others it has been identified as a spiritual quest for knowledge. It is by most accounts a fun parlor game. However, there is much truth to the universal language of numbers. Understanding the role that they play in this universe may just remove much of the mystery for a person - the fact that mystery is removed by embarking upon something "mysterious" makes it all that much more --- a spiritual art.
Let's take a look for a moment on where and when numerology first entered our sights.
Numerology is perhaps the oldest "science" known to man. We have to quote the use of the word science, because that is truly a misnomer. Numerology is and has been for most a very spiritual quest.
The beginnings of Numerology have been tracked back to ancient Chinese writings. Writings inscribed on the back of a tortoise shell no less. Further, those writings were estimated to be about 4,000 years old. Currently, it still holds the claim to fame as being the oldest known writings in existence.
Numerology is based on real numbers and mathematical principles, but they are applied to the life and the spirit. In fact a typical "quick reading will be done upon three basic points: the person's life path, expression, and their soul urge.
Here's a quote from one person's soul urge reading to better illustrate the very spiritual aspect that numerology addresses:
"The highest expression of your soul's urge is to connect in a mystical way with others. Although your aspirations are lofty, you are also a humanitarian who is often gifted with a sharp intuition and keen analytical skills. Often you give up opportunities that should be yours, simply to help another. This is because your faith in yourself, god and the future is so strong that you live by your conviction that the universe is always unfolding as it should.
"Others simply do not possess your spiritual sophistication and may be amused or repelled by what they see as your irrational talk or beliefs. You may be accused of being stupid or foolish simply because you won't take the bait (of a job or money) at the expense of your ethics. Compared to the other numbers, you excel at letting go of lovers or opportunities simply because you know you can't take emotions and material goods with you when you die."
Then let's review how major religions have viewed numerology:
• Chinese Taoism allocated a lucky or unlucky quality to the first nine numbers.
• The Pythagoreans gave us philosophical titles to interpret these nine numbers.
• The Hebrew rabbinical mystics described the Tree of Life as a set of mystical titles for the number series. (source: David Allen Hulse)
This interpretation of the first nine numbers in numerology is provided by Madame Blavatsky, who published them in her Secret Doctrine.
1. A living, standing being, divine, celestial
2. Imperfect state, fall, branching
3. Mystery, spiritual man, triangle
4. Immortality, physical, matter, animal
5. Disorder, confusion, universe, the five limbs of man
6. Earth asleep during autumn, winter; the world ready to be animated by spirit
7. Earth awake during spring, summer; life eternal; man as spiritual and physical
8. Eternal, spiral motion of cycles
9. Incessant reproduction, multiplication
Even with only a quick glance at the actual nature of Numerology, it is quickly seen that the practice helps a person to find their spiritual life and their in this universe.
