Description: Because of the great variety of Buddhist traditions currently practiced, there is some confusion as to the basic principles which Siddatha Gotama (563 BC - 480 BC) himself taught to the order of monks, nuns and laity. This talk presents basic Buddhist concepts derived directly from the canonical discourses (suttas) of the Buddha himself, as translated from the oldest extant Sinahalese manuscripts. We will review the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Path, annica (impermanence), annata (non-self), silas (moralities), samadhi (concentration), vipassana (insight), dhamma (doctrine) and nibbana (extinction).

About the Speaker: Etan Boritzer has studied Eastern philosophy and practiced in various spiritual disciplines since 1968 with teachers in India, Japan and the United States. He is the best selling children's book author of What Is God? as well as 10 other books in the "What is?" series now translated and published in 12 languages, and also being sold continuously by Bodhi Tree Bookstore since 1989.
